In this application, the generator is used as a mains backup to supply the energy required by the buildings and infrastructures that manage the fuel stock at a civil airport.
Retrofitting a cabinet with the latest technology is often necessary to modernize an aging installation and make it more reliable. The use of latest-generation generator controllers also increases productivity and reduces operating costs.
The CRE Technology solution chosen by the airport combines an AMF COMPACT controller with automatic mains failure detection, and its i4Gen color touchscreen HMI. A BP+0524M-305 battery charger is also used.
The AMF COMPACT controller has been chosen as the best solution for managing:
- Automatic mains failure detection
- Auto start generator in case of mains failure
- Automatic changeover from mains breaker to generator on mains failure
- Automatic changeover from generator breaker to mains when mains return
- Automatic generator shutdown on mains return
- Engine monitoring and protection
- Alternator monitoring and protection
This upgrade with the AMF Compact and its I4Gen replaced or eliminated eleven components and all associated wiring, representing almost 25kg, installed in the original panel. The following components were removed during the upgrade:
- Alarm panel
- DC overvoltage protection relay
- Associated lamps and lamp test
- Energy meter
- Overcurrent relay
- Undervoltage relay
- Underfrequency relay
- Overspeed relay
- Mains monitoring system
- Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) control system
- Generator hour meter
The CRE BP+0524M-305 battery charger (with switching technology) has also replaced a transformer-based battery charger with its protection relay, resulting in significant weight and space savings.
Improvements
Thanks to this renovation, the airport now has:
- A centralized, user-friendly controller that controls, protects, and displays all power plant parameters, events, and alarms on a single HMI.
- And considerably reduce the risk of breakdowns by eliminating many old, obsolete, and outdated components
